Counter-Culture Series Pt5: Pure in Heart - Seeing God Through Intentional Living

March 17, 2024

In this installment of our "Counter Culture" series, we delve into the heart of what it means to be “pure in heart.” Jesus teaches us in Matthew 5:8 that those who are pure in heart will see God, and this promise is not just for the future—it’s for today. If we desire to see God move in our lives, we must live with intentionality, pursuing Him with clean hands and a genuine heart.

The Narrow Road and the Blessings of Purity

As always, Matthew 7:13-14 anchors our message, reminding us that walking the narrow road requires more than outward obedience—it demands inward purity. The Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3-12 outline the blessings of the Kingdom, and today, we focus on verse 8: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Purity of heart isn’t just about avoiding sin; it’s about pursuing God with the right motives, seeking His presence above all else.

Intentional Living and Pure Motives

God has continually reminded me of the importance of living intentionally. Every act of prayer, worship, and service must come from a heart that seeks to honor God, not ourselves. Luke 18:10-14 contrasts two men praying in the temple: one focused on self-righteousness and the other, on humility. Jesus teaches us that God exalts the humble and those with pure hearts.

Choosing Purity in a Self-Centered World

In a world that encourages self-promotion and pride, we are called to be different. Philippians 2:3-4 urges us to consider others above ourselves, and this mindset is essential if we are to be pure in heart. When we prioritize God and others, we align ourselves with His Kingdom and make space for Him to move in and through us.

Closing Thoughts: Seeking God’s Presence with a Pure Heart

As we continue our journey in "Counter Culture," let’s examine our hearts and motives. Are we seeking God for what He can do for us, or are we seeking Him simply for who He is? Purity of heart allows us to see God—not just in eternity, but in the everyday moments of life. Let’s live with clean hands, pure hearts, and a desire to glorify Him above all else.
